Nestled in a gorgeous landscape in the Toledo town of Otero, the González Family, already in its fifth generation, has created awinery to thus prove that González Byass continues tomore than interested in finding lands where their excellent workmanship with wines can be developed and in being present in key denominations of origin in Spain.
Although the estate was purchased in the year 2001, the construction works for thewinery did not actually start until February of 2005, finally being officially inaugurated in May of the following year. Gonzalo Tello’s design has been painstakingly elaborated, carefully studying even the smallest of details on this 230-hectare estate that borders with the foothills of the Gredos Sierra to the north and with the Montes de Toledo to the south, offering magnificent views from the estate.
If the architecture is integrated and respectful with the environment, the facilities have also been laid-out tominimize to amaximumany external aggressions to the vines and wine, to the point of even treating the residual waters for their reuse in the drip irrigation systemfor the vines. Everything is aimed at the quality of the wine being paramount: the winery counts with 100 vats with automatic temperature control, eight special vats for production of high-expression wines fitted with gravityfill systems and intracellularmaceration, along with a bay with capacity for 2000 barrels.
For the Jerez based firmthis project, slogan of which is “from the vine, modernity as opposed to tradition”, has represented an investment of 17 million Euros, in which planting of its 190 hectares of vineyard is included. The varieties that are cultivated here are Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Graciano for red wines; while white wines count with grape varieties such as Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. A teamof specialists integrated by 14 persons insures that the winery’s entire process of elaboration is perfect, with a production capacity of 300,000 nine-liter cases. Their wines are commercialized on the market under the brand Altozano and, although they can be tasted in Spain, the proprietors aim at most of their production going to the international market, mainly United Kingdomand the United States.
Beingwell aware as they are of the enriching experiences that result from wine-tourism, given that with Bodegas Tío Pepe they were alreadypioneers inthe opening of their Jerez facilities to visitors, inOtero they have also decided to open their doors and display their vineyards and magnificent facilities.
