Many nobles set their residence in the town of Pozoamargo between the 17th and 18th centuries. Buenavista, a thousand-year-old estate of over 450 hectares, was born during this period conceived as a hunting reserve. In the heart of this estate, the Bodegas Illana can easily be recognized with its old pigeon house forming part of the installations and which has become its best image. “Tradition, craftsmanship and a strong family spirit” are the mottos defining this company that started up in 1985with the planting of vines on espalier.
This project is currently in the hands of the fourth generation and reached its culmination in 2003 with the construction of a mediumsized wine cellar, prepared for the elaboration of some 150,000 Kg. Of grapes and provided with the latest technological innovations. The 100 hectares of vineyards are in the center of the Ribera del Júcar Denomination of Origin and grow on a plateau at a height of 750meters, on clayey-calcareous soil with pebbles resulting fromthe action of the river. These allow water to be retained, which is favorable in periods of drought that are typical of a continental, dry climate.
Apart frominsulating, the pebbles reflect sunlight towards the grapes, aiding their maturing process. In the early days of September, agriculturists and oenologists from the wine cellar survey the vineyard, measuring the degree of ripening and the state of the grapes in order to decide on the ideal moment for harvesting. The principle of this wine cellar are to maintain and observe traditions regarding varieties in these lands using Cencibel, Bobal and small grained Moscatel grapes, while also cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, leading to a greater complexity of its wines.
Another of Illana’s peculiarities is that it elaborateswines that countwith the Kosher certification (suitable in Hebrew), the same in collaboration with the Elviwines Firm. Orthodox Jews can consume these unique wines, given that they adapt to the standard that represents strict compliance with the requirements involved in its process of elaboration. After booking in advance, both the estate and the wine cellar can be visited to enjoy the marvelous panoramic view of the vineyard.
